History: | Named for John Konkapot, a Mahican sachem who in 1724 joined in the sale of Indian lands on the Housatonic River and became Chief about 1744. He embraced Christianity and invited Moravian missionaries to labor among his people who became to be known as the Stockbridge Indians after being Christianized and removed to the mission (Steel). |
